Hello Suhashini

Suhashini Perera is a narcissitic abuse specialist and somatic trauma informed coach with qualifications in psychotherapy and counselling, CBT, exposure and response prevention and trauma.

Hello Suhashini

Why did you get involved in Counselling  as a career path and means of
support?

My decision to pursue a career in counselling as a means of support stems from a
deeply personal and passionate commitment to addressing mental health challenges
within the South Asian community. Having navigated my own journey through
anxiety, depression, and trauma, I recognized the profound impact that culturally
specific experiences can have on mental well-being. Witnessing the prevalent
stigma and lack of open dialogue surrounding mental health within the South
Asian culture motivated me to take action.

As a Narcissistic Abuse Specialist and Somatic Trauma-Informed Coach, my
expertise is finely tuned to the unique challenges faced by South Asians dealing
with depression, anxiety, trauma, anger, grief and toxic relationships. The
integration of somatic trauma-informed coaching allows me to approach healing
holistically, acknowledging the mind-body connection in the context of cultural
sensitivity.

My mission is to create a safe and understanding space for individuals within the
South Asian community to explore their struggles and triumphs. Specializing in
narcissistic abuse is particularly important as it addresses a form of toxicity that
can be pervasive yet often overlooked. By providing support in these specific
areas, I aspire to empower individuals to recognize the root causes of their issues,
guide them through the healing process, and ultimately help them thrive.

I am driven by the belief that everyone deserves to live a life free from the burdens
of mental health challenges and toxic relationships. By specializing in these areas,
I aim to contribute to breaking down the stigma surrounding mental health within
the South Asian community and fostering a culture of healing and resilience.

What is your cultural background and what makes it stand out?
I am a South Asian (Tamil), born in Singapore, with ancestral roots in India. Having
grown up immersed in these diverse cultures, I believe it enriches my ability to
connect with both the younger and older generations of South Asians. My
experience in conducting online therapy/coaching sessions with clients from
various countries such as the UK, USA, Singapore, Australia, and Canada, who
originate from places like Pakistan, Sri Lanka, India, and Bangladesh, has

deepened my understanding of cultural nuances across generations. This
awareness, especially within a Western context, simplifies my interactions with
individuals.

What sort of individual challenges can you best support for clients?
I support clients through the multifaceted challenges that stem from narcissistic
abuse and trauma. My expertise lies in offering comprehensive support for a wide
range of personal struggles, including but not limited to, depression, anxiety, and
intrusive thoughts; grappling with relationship grief and workplace stress;
addressing anger issues; navigating toxic or dysfunctional relationships; coping
with trauma and PTSD; tackling perfectionism or fear of failure; and overcoming
tendencies towards people-pleasing or co-dependency. My approach is
collaborative, focusing on finding the root cause and creating a therapeutic space
that is not only healing but also empowering. My goal is to help clients not just
survive but thrive, transforming challenges into opportunities for growth and self-
realization.

Is there anything else you want to branch out into later?
I am currently pursuing a Masters in Counseling with a focus on couple/marriage
and family counselling to expand and deepen my expertise as a Narcissistic Abuse
Specialist and Somatic Trauma-Informed Coach. This direction aligns perfectly
with my current practice, as it offers a holistic approach to addressing the complex
dynamics of narcissistic abuse within intimate relationships and family structures.
By gaining theoretical knowledge and practical skills in counselling, I'll be better
equipped to support individuals in healing from trauma, while also helping couples
and families navigate and rebuild healthier relational dynamics.

What is the last show/movie you watched / currently watching ?
My favourite series on Netflix is “Mindhunter”. I love watching Mindhunter
because its like diving into the darkest corners of the human mind with a
detectives badge; it fascinates me to see how understanding the most complex
behaviors can unlock mysteries and, in a way, teaches me more about the depths of
our own psyche.
I also like the movie 'Rocky Aur Rani Ki Prem Kahani' for its deep dive into the
complexities of love, marriage, and family dynamics within the South Asian
context. As a therapist/coach specializing in narcissistic abuse and trauma, the
films exploration of traditional versus modern values, and the impact of familial
obligations on personal choices, resonates with me profoundly. It mirrors the
challenges faced by my clients, offering me valuable insights into the cultural
nuances that shape their experiences.
