Shakti Mental Health: August Newsletter

Hey everyone, Jagesh from Shakti Mental Health, Welcome to our August edition of the Shakti Mental Health newsletter! This month Shakti took part in Cook 4 CALD annual support market in the South East of Melbourne supporting fundraising for their summer program and providing information and resources to attendees. We have a few stalls coming up in September including RU OK day support and 314 Euphoria Social Multicultural community festival (stay tuned for details!).

Our August programs include our South Asian mens circle, Social threads offline 2.0 collab support and the Lifting collective! We are currently looking for volunteers to support Shakti Mental Health and will be promoting this through our socials soon! If you are interesting in taking part, fill in the volunteer EOI at the bottom of the newsletter.

Words of wellbeing: Each month our newsletter will introduce you to a different word in South Asian language used to convey wellbeing and emotions. South Asian words that explain feelings and emotions English never could.

Dukkho Bilash দুঃখ বিলাস (Bangla) A Bangla term that describes the luxury of sadness, when someone holds on to their sadness almost deliberately, treating it like a quiet emotional refuge rather than trying to escape it. Finding peace within their sadness.

তোর ভেতরের ঐ সামান্য দুঃখ বিলাসটুকু দেখলে এখন আর খারাপ লাগে না—মনে হয় এই কষ্টটাই তোকে আরও কোমল, আরও মানুষ করে তুলেছে।

That little bit of dukkho bilash in you doesn’t feel sad anymore it feels like this sorrow has made you softer, more human

Tor bhitorer oi shamanno dukkho bilash‑tuku dekhle ekhon ar kharap lage na — mone hoy ei kôstota toke aro komol, aro manush kore tulese koshtota

In solidarity,

Jagesh: Shakti Mental Health
